Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Telluride?
Located on the scenic San Juan Skyway in the heart of southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, Telluride and Mountain Village are 67 miles south of Montrose, 127 miles south of Grand Junction, 125 miles northwest of Durango; 7 hours from Denver, 9 from Phoenix and 6 from Albuquerque.

A National Historic Landmark District with Victorian-era architecture, Telluride rests at the base of the Telluride ski mountain and is surrounded by 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks. The town is roughly 10 blocks long and five blocks wide, which means a car is unnecessary, especially with the free Galloping Goose and Gondola transportation systems.

What about Mountain Village?
Mountain Village is connected to Telluride by a free gondola ride. Located mid-mountain at 9,500 feet above sea level, Mountain Village overlooks some of Colorado’s most magnificent peaks. The year-round alpine resort was incorporated in 1995 and hosts a championship golf course, world-class mountain biking, a luxurious spa and the amenities of a thriving community.

Who can I contact for more information about my visit?
Telluride Visitors Center is on the right as you enter Telluride at 630 W. Colorado Avenue. The staff at the Information Center can assist you with lodging, ticketing, activities and general information about both Telluride and Mountain Village. For advance air, lodging, ground transportation and activity reservations, contact a specialist at Telluride Central Reservations: 800-525-3455 or www.VisitTelluride.com.

Where can I stay?

What Is the weather like?
Click here for current Telluride Weather.

Winter temperatures can dip as low as -8ºF, but much of the time it is far warmer. During snowstorms, the temperatures hover around 30ºF, and sunny days (of which there are many) can be mild or cool (anywhere from -8ºF to 70ºF).
Summer daytime temperatures in the 70s are typical for our high alpine, semi-arid climate. Weather can change dramatically, even over the course of a day. Sunny mornings may be followed by afternoon thundershowers and clear evenings. Nighttime temperatures can dip into the 30s.

What Is it like at altitude?
At 8,750 feet in Telluride and 9,500 feet in Mountain Village, the air pressure is 40 percent lower than sea level. Regardless of physical fitness, Acute Mountain Sickness can strike any visitor. Staying hydrated helps adjusting: Drink three to four quarts of water per day; avoid overexertion, caffeine and alcohol for the first few days. Seek medical attention if persistent headache, fatigue, poor coordination or shortness of breath occur. Also at this altitude, the danger of sunburn is more intense. Wear sunglasses and UVA/UVB protection.

Is there a medical facility in Telluride?
The Telluride Medical Center is a full-service, 24-hour medical facility with emergency ambulance and helicopter service to neighboring hospitals. Call the Telluride Medical Center, 970-728-3848 or 911 for emergency services.

What’s off season?
Telluride’s two active seasons revolve around the opening of the ski area and the festival-intensive summer and fall schedule (mid-May to mid-November). In between summer and winter lies months of transitional weather and quiet, also known as off season (mid-April to mid-May and mid-October to mid-November).

Will my dog like Telluride?
Dogs in Telluride and Mountain Village are required to be on a leash at all times. Pick-up bags and trash containers are provided for the disposal of pet waste. Refer to Places to Stay to see which accommodations accept pets.

Where is bridal veil falls?
Colorado’s longest (365 feet) free-falling waterfall is at the east end of Telluride’s box canyon. Head straight through town on Colorado Avenue and continue for approximately two miles until you reach Pandora Mill, a large historic structure on the left. If you don’t have a 4x4 vehicle, park here or just up the dirt road before the first big curve. You can see the falls from this area, but we recommend walking farther up the dirt road to the base.
